2010 Autumn Training Programme:

Introduction to Counselling Skills

This workshop will introduce trainees to listening and helping skills which can be used in everyday life.  Participants will also be introduced to some basic counselling concepts.   
Topics covered include;
  • Different types of helping
  • Establishing a helping interaction
  • Self-awareness and awareness of differences
  • Specific initial counselling interventions
The workshop usually consists of a mixture of tutor input, group discussion, individual reflection, experiential learning and skills practise. Suitable for those who want to learn basic skills to help other people

Full Cost Recovery

This is a short one day course intended to draw attention to the importance of full cost recovery, explore ways of calculating various costs and of how to use those accurate costings in funding applications and tenders for contracts.

It is intended that, by the end of the day, participants will have a greater understanding of the true costs of delivering their services. Unfortunately, time will not allow us in depth analysis of individual organisations' FCR, or to look intensively at various methods of calculating FCR.

Elementary Food Hygiene

This course involves a short exam covering the course content, which leads to a recognised certificate.  Participants will gain a practical understanding of food safety systems based on HACCP principles and how to apply that knowledge to control hazards and prevent food poisoning. 

Outcomes:
Ø      Introduction to food hygiene
Ø      Bacteria and their characteristics
Ø      The incidence of food poisoning and its prevention
Ø      Raising awareness of safe practices
Ø      Personal hygiene and the working habits of the food handler
Ø      The working environment
Ø      Cleaning practices
Ø      Common food pests and their control
Ø      Food safety legislation 


This course is aimed at staff, volunteers and service providers who are responsible for food preparation and handling.

Introduction to Social Accounting

This one day course will explain the process of social accounting which allows an organisation to measure how well it is doing in relation to its social, economic and environmental performance (the triple-bottom line) 

At the end of the session participants will:
q       Understand the principles and values behind social accounting
q       Understand the stages of social accounting.
q       Be able to identify whether or not social accounting is suitable for their organisation.
q       Have identified the range of performance and impact information they currently keep and where the gaps    are. 

This includes a copy of the Social Audit Network’s manual.

Self Harm Awareness

This workshop has been developed by Penumbra.  It aims to increase the knowledge and confidence of participants around the issue of self-harm, improve practice and reduce the stigma of self-harm.   

Course objectives:
  • Defining and understanding self-harm
  • Causes of self-harm
  • Recognising self-harm
  • What is the function of self-’harm
  • Self-harm and suicide
  • Responding to people who self-harm
  • Alternative options for people who self-harm
 (participants will receive a certificate of attendance for CPD purposes)

Speak Up Speak Out

SUSO Workshops provide a positive and supportive environment for participants to build confidence and effectiveness in verbal communication skills. 


The session includes techniques to overcome nerves, make your point clearly and concisely, think on your feet, improve presentation skills and even start to enjoy speaking-up in public!

Dealing with Difficult People

This course will include practical examples and delegates will participate in group work.

 The course covers: 
  • Recognising difficult people
  • Different personality traits
  • What makes people ‘difficult’
  • How to work to overcome these perceptions.

Appointed Person's First Aid

This course is for people wishing to learn basic First Aid which qualifies them to act as the Appointed Person in the workplace.  The course is also suitable for those wishing to attend a general First Aid course to obtain a valid three year First Aid Certificate.

  • DRAB check and sending for help
  • Unconscious casualties
  • Choking
  • Dealing with blood loss and shock
  • Burns and scalds
  • Fractures
  • Heart attacks

Introduction to Manual Handling (Half Day)
Introduction to Manual Handling and Moving & Handling (Full Day)

Morning –
·        
The size of the problem

Anatomy of the Spine Base movement Principals
·         Observation and participation in manual handling techniques, including team lifts.
 
Suitable for individuals involved in the movement, handling and storage of inanimate objects.
 

Afternoon –
·        
People Handling Risk Assessment.

Techniques for standing, sitting and walking the service user with one and two carers
·        
Transfers from chair to chair and toileting
·        
Small Handling Aids
·        
Clarification of unsafe practice and best practice for the fallen service user.

Suitable for individuals involved in the movement of service users who have weight bearing capacity and upper body strength who require limited assistance. 

N.B. Anyone wishing to undertake the people handling part of the course must attend the whole day

Training for Trainers

A fun, practical, skill-building workshop led by an experienced trainer. Suitable for anyone with a training responsibility, this course equips the delegates with a trainer’s ‘toolkit.’
